Checklist of barriers to participating in a study

This checklist has been taken from Mapstone J, Elbourne D, Roberts I. Strategies to improve recruitment to research studies.  Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2007, Issue 2.  It details some of the barriers to patients being involved in research.

• Additional procedures and appointments for patients.
• Additional travel problems and costs for patients.
• Patient preferences for a particular treatment (or no treatment).
• Worry about uncertainty of treatment or study.
• Patient concerns about information and consent.
• Protocol causing problems with recruitment.
• Clinician concerns about information provision to patients.
