Tools for Policy makers

Making it easier to implement effective health policies
To improve their health systems and improve maternal and child health, LMICs must become able to use research to inform policy decisions on the selection and delivery of effective interventions.  The often very limited influence on policy making in developing countries of reliable evidence undermines the potential for economically rational, criterion based and transparent decision-making, thus jeopardising sustainable development in the health sector and preventing good governance.

SUPPORT has worked with key policymakers in all of the participating countries to develop and support new research relevant to current policy requirements.

SUPPORT Summaries
Structured reports summarising existing reviews of interventions in maternal and child health and health systems.
SUPPORT Tools for Policymakers
SUPPORT has developed a series of 19 articles (called ‘SUPPORT Tools for Policymakers’, or STP), which describe the processes that ensure relevant research is identified, appraised and used appropriately to inform health policymaking.  These articles (STP) will be published in the Biomed Central open access journal Health and Research Policy and Systems 2009, Vol 7.

NorthStar for LMICs (Zip format, 31 371 kb)
NorthStar for LMICs (low and middle-income countries) is a tool that will help evaluators of interventions to improve the quality of healthcare. It is targeted at quality improvement researchers and healthcare professionals and managers responsible for developing, delivering and evaluating quality improvement (QI) programmes.  NorthStar was originally developed in a sister project ReBEQI (www.rebeqi.org/) but was updated as part of SUPPORT.
